Gifts from abroad

My sister went overseas and bought me back some very cute gifts.  These are just two of them:

a gorgeous cotton birdy bag with the cutest bird drawings and miniature colouring pencils.....
they are tiny!!  I will have to hide them from little fingers!

Some time to sew

I had a whole day to do some crafting, so I made some cushion covers with material I had bought just for that purpose and when I had finished two, I thought a bag might look good in the same fabric, so I had a go at that too!

It's lined with calico and I remembered this morning as I was taking it out to do some shopping, and the rain was falling, that I didn't prewash the who knows what will happen when it comes time to give it a wash!  I made up the pattern based on an old favourite Kiki K bag I had.

The pattern for the cushions comes from this lovely blog:
and I had been meaning to give it a try for ages. It worked perfectly and I am pretty pleased with the result!

A watercolour and ink drawing.  Today has been so cold, so it's a very good reason to have a laptop sitting on your lap to keep you warm.  I found these going through my old illustrations file.  Two fish swimming in opposite directions.  Pisces perhaps?

These two little friends are enjoying a seat near the window.  Made from felt and sewn round with blanket stitch, and stuffed with a bit of stuffing!

Where has the time gone?

I can't believe that 3 months has passed since I posted on this least I have some creations to show for that time...though not many, but something is better than nothing, huh?  In between living, playing with grandchildren, eating, watching tv, reading and listening to ABC Radio National and volunteering at an art gallery, I have finished a few things...

A cushion for my niece who has gone to live in New York...

a pussycat cushion with felt pussycat

...and a wall hanging for my granddaughter's 10th birthday.

Finished Painting!

Hooray....I finished another thing.  A watercolour and ink painting.  I am very pleased with myself for finishing it.  I am going to see if I can make prints of it (it is A4 size) and add it to the other crafty things I am making in the hopes of having a market stall soon.

The Owl and the Pussycat

A new project ... The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat...

This is a watercolour I've started and for some reason these two girls keep appearing lately!  My granddaughter wanted me to put in the little pixies so I did.  I hope it works out ok. I'm never good at finishing things but I'll keep plodding away.  It's very cold here at the moment so it's a good excuse to stay inside and paint.

Orange shapes

This is what I entered into the Feeling Stitchy Rainbow of Colours Competition. I've never used a hoop before and I think the linen was unevenly stretched but I went ahead anyhow....I only had two colours of orange and probably should have drawn the design first, but it was fun to have a go.

My working space

This is the state of my dining room table at the moment. Just a bit chaotic.  But hey, a bit of chaos never goes astray.  Amazing what can turn up when you have to go searching for something.  You find things you had forgotten you know, those sorts of items that you just had to have and were going to go home and use straight away!

My first sewing machine!!

I bought this little Elna Opal a couple of weeks ago.  It's the first sewing machine I have ever purchased.  I've had a loan of my mother-in-law's for a while but haven't ever really sewn much. So when I thought it would help with little craft projects I decided to go for something really simple.  It only does running stitch and zigzag!!  I'm still getting used to it.
Some french knots on the bottom of a little bear I made on the machine, but I'm so bad at sewing that I couldn't work out how to finish it off, and so I hand stitched along the bottom seam.
I don't know why she hasn't got any arms, I think it was too difficult.  Hopefully the next one will be better!!  It's a learning curve and that is supposed to be good for someone my age (grandmother age...but a young grandmother, really!)

A wedding anniversary

My first attempt at a bit larger embroidery, this time on calico for my son and daughter-in-law's 12th wedding anniversary. I picked up a small piece of sea washed driftwood to hang it on from the beach down the road...

Apples on a tree

My first attempt at some embroidery.  After coming across this blog  with so many examples of lovely little one inch squares, I had to have a go at it.  Just one little rectangle.  I have so many pretty coloured embroidery cottons now, I want to use all of them.

Easter dinosaur

This one is for my grandson for Easter.  He'll like this more than a chicken, I think. Made from felt, and the other side is green with brown spots.

Fish Tales

'Once upon a time there were things called fish'.  A little watercolour card.

pen and colour pencil on calico

First post on this blog.  These are some little calico characters.  I drew them in waterproof ink and then I coloured them in with colouring in pencils and then I stitched around them and put a bit of stuffing inside them.  Some I used as Christmas tags on presents.
